First-Ever Governance Forum for Ontario’s Co-operatives and Mutuals

On October 11, 2018 the Ontario Co-operative Association (OCA), in collaboration with Co-operative Management Education in the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University, will be launching the first-ever Governance Forum for Ontario’s co-operatives and mutuals in downtown Toronto!

This event was created from many discussions over the years with our members and non-members alike, who have expressed the need for more effective governance training for their boards – and who do not have the resources to provide this training internally.  Our goal is to provide a platform and an opportunity for co-operative and mutual directors to gather and receive the information and tools that they need, to elevate them to a place where they can be more engaged, and make more informed decisions that impact their organizations in a positive way.

The stronger the leadership, the stronger the organization, the stronger the movement.

The October 11th full-day agenda will include higher level discussion topics for delegates representing larger organizations, as well as more focused sessions and workshops targeted to the needs of new, emerging and small co-operatives and mutuals. Our main objective is to create an environment where organizations can share, learn and collaborate, no matter what their size or stage of development.

Additionally, on the morning of Friday, October 12th, all Governance Forum delegates will be invited to attend and participate in a special collaborative session with the delegates of the Credit Union Directors’ Forum – an annual event designed for Ontario’s credit union board directors.  Co-operatives and credit unions have the same commitment to their communities across the province, and these communities face many of the same challenges no matter where they are located. The objective of this session will be to identify these challenges and then to explore collaborative solutions.
