“ Community Innovation and Social Enterprise †Conference
July 12-14, 2017
Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada
The Community Economic Development Institute of the Shannon School of Business, Cape Breton University,  is dedicated to advancing community capacity in economic development. Building on the popularity of our 2011 and 2013 conferences, where we had over 200 attendees, we are organizing another multidisciplinary conference focused on “Community Innovation & Social Enterpriseâ€.
Community-based ventures are a strong part of the Canadian economy for more than a century and recent innovative practices have made the social enterprise sector a hot topic. The conference brings together practitioners, researchers, and community organizations, from home and afar, to discuss current practices, challenges, and innovations in advancing social entrepreneurship and improving community livelihoods.
We have had excellent feedback on our previous three conferences, with more than 200 people attending in July 2015. The 2017 conference will include a keynote address from Dr. Roy Suddaby, Professor and Francis G. Winspear Chair at the University of Victoria. Recognized as one of the world’s most influential researchers in organizational and social change, Dr. Suddaby has been elected to the Royal Society of Canada, he is among the Thomson Reuters group of academics who rank in the top one per cent of citations in their field,  and will share his insights with all of us at the conference.
The conference includes the following themes:
- Community-based development
- Social Enterprises and Innovation
- Co-operatives and sustainable business models
- Place-based business
- Indigenous Enterprise
- Entrepreneurship Ecosystems
Please mark your calendar and come to Cape Breton to connect in July. Â We are keeping the conference cost low:Â if you register by May 15, 2017, the cost of the conference is only $190+tax, and that includes our famous Surf & Turf dinner extravaganza (Cape Breton lobster & beef) by the Sydney harbour.
You are invited to submit a proposal for a presentation, panel, or roundtable discussion. We also accept general proposals which may not fit the categories listed above. There will be no formal conference proceedings published.
Please submit your proposal by March 15, 2017. The proposal should include:
• Working title
• The theme it fits in
• 100-word abstract of the presentation, and a
• 50-word bio of presenter.
Please reply to this email message (CED_conference@cbu.ca) and attach your proposal as a Word file; we will reply with a receipt confirmation.

Venue
The conference will be held on Cape Breton University’s campus. Located on Canada’s east coast, CBU (www.cbu.ca) makes its home in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Sydney is easily accessible, serviced with Air Canada and Westjet direct flights from Toronto and  Halifax.
Cape Breton is known for its natural beauty, pace of life, history, and friendly people. The folks at Travel + Leisure magazine World’s Best Awards 2009, pretty much summed it up for us naming Cape Breton Island the number one, ‘must-see’ island to visit in North America and number three on its top islands of the world list. Home to the Fortress of Louisbourg and the world renowned Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island’s breathtaking scenery leaves an imprint on all visitors.
